Spotted hyenas have always fascinated me. I became even more fascinated when I learned that they once lived in Europe (where they are termed "cave hyenas"). Yes, cave hyenas and spotted hyenas were the same species! The main difference between the African and European varieties was the latter's much greater size (see [link] here. 102 kg (225 lbs)!!)
Apparently, many cave bear bones show evidence of hyena predation. No one can say whether or not they were scavenged or killed, but hey, the latter scenario is more inspiring.

It's worth noting that Cave Bears were around the same size as today's Alaskan Browns. The biggest bear to have ever lived, the Short-Faced Bear, was something straight out of a nightmare. They dwarfed today's polars and browns, and were faster than horses. A full grown male stood somewhere around 12-14 feet tall on it's hind legs and weighed approximately 2,200 pounds! That said and done, the Short-Faced Bear would probably have gotten the last laugh if it fought against a group of Cave Hyenas.
