Dragons as described in the book "Flight of Dragons" by Peter Dickinson.
They're portrayed completely different from the animated film. In the book, dragons are born as giant newtlike amphibians which grow up to be very sexually dimorphic. Females are flightless and cannot breathe fire, but compensate with tough armour. Males on the other hand have extremely vulnerable hides to avoid being too heavy to fly. Their wings are actually modifications of the ribcage rather than extra limbs.
The book goes as far as saying that in the "Beowulf" story, Grendel and his mother were in fact dragons.
